Inclusive Friends Association meets the new Benue State SSG Barr. Aber Serumun Deborah, advocates for the Domestication of Disability Act in Benue State

In a crucial advocacy visit today, the Inclusive Friends Association (IFA), led by its Executive Director, Grace Jerry, met with the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) of Benue State, Barr. Aber Serumun Deborah. The meeting aimed to push for the swift domestication of the Disability Act, which would provide much-needed legal protection and rights for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the state.

During the visit, Grace Jerry underscored the urgency of the domestication process, emphasizing that Benue State remains the only state in North Central Nigeria yet to pass this essential legislation. She called upon the SSG to leverage her influence to ensure the Governor’s support, potentially positioning the bill as an Executive Bill to fast-track its passage.

Barr. Aber Deborah commended IFA's persistent advocacy and assured the delegation of her full support. She acknowledged that the draft bill is already being considered at the executive level and expressed confidence that it would soon receive the necessary attention. The SSG also committed to prioritizing the bill's presentation to the State Executive Council, marking a significant step forward in the journey toward legal recognition and inclusion of PWDs in Benue State.

This advocacy visit is part of IFA’s broader efforts to promote the rights of PWDs and ensure their active participation in society. Once passed, the Disability Act will align Benue State’s legal framework with national and international standards, including the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).

With this positive engagement, there is renewed hope that the Disability Act will soon be domesticated in Benue State, offering vital legal protections to ensure that PWDs can fully participate in the social, economic, and political life of the state.
